Seed sowing continues……..today it’s all about the Loofah and the Achocha……plus a few back-ups for the squash I started indoors. I also put something out in the garden which always makes me think that summer will be just around the corner.

Vivi’s Kitchen Garden 181: ‘Beans, beans, they’re good for your heart…’ & chickpeas too.
The direct sowing continues…..today it’s all about the beans, both climbing and bush varieties, with old favourites like Gigantes and some lovely new types to try……….and the chickpeas, one of my all time favourite vegetables to both grow and scoff.

At last, the time has come…..all the major bed preparation and structure building has been done…..so it’s time to start sowing. Today is the beginning of a week long seed sowing marathon and it feels great!
Vivi’s Kitchen Garden 179: Vertical Gardening: A cathedral for climbing squash & climbing beans.
It’s time for the last big jobs to be done. Today I am making my vegetable cathedral for climbing squash and climbing beans. Going vertical frees up so much space for other crops so it is well worth my effort…..even on a rainy day.
Vivi’s Kitchen Garden 178: Earthing potatoes up, new herbs & a thank you or two (plus a crazy beer!).
So much to do, so little energy to do it with! A surprise parcel helps though……. With a predicted cold spell I get stuck into earthing up my spuds and protecting the new herbs…….dig a little more, move lots of heavy stuff and generally work until I need a beer……and what a beer it was!

Hurrah for the mad month of May. This is one of the busiest months in the garden for me……..the month when the majority of my seeding happens, plants go into the ground, structures go up……this is the month when the garden really gets set up for the rest of the year. It’s a wonderful moment each year when the first plants go into the ground! Today I’m planting and sowing peas……which means the first sticks or poles are also going into the ground. Hurrah! I also check to see how my experiment is going with the plank topped carrot bed……

Thoughts on……Month 24: Two Years!
Today as I sit down to reflect on the last month I realise it’s actually a bit bigger than just the last month……I’ve been at this lark, this living without a wage thing for a full two years now……I could never have predicted this! It has been a time full of joy and some moments of doubt and fear…..it has been the biggest challenge of my life…..yet also, in some ways, the easiest thing ever……and now I start to look forward and imagine the next few years…..
Vivi’s Kitchen Garden 175: Flint Corn & Coco de Paimpol.
Seed sowing continues (it seems relentless at this time of year!)….today it’s the Flint Corn and Coco de Paimpol. I check to see how the seeds in the coldframe are coming along and I’m a bit worried……but elsewhere there are lovely signs of life and new growth.
