It’s not freezing cold…..but the greyness and the damp make it feel pretty miserable outside. I need soul warming and belly filling food. Using last year’s stored harvests I cook up a big pot of chilli to keep me company during this extended winter.

When it’s raining cats and dogs and rather chilly outside there’s only one thing for it – play with the indoor sown seedlings. The peppers and celeriac sown six weeks ago are big enough now to move onto the next stage……bigger pots.
It’s been a tough three days getting trenches ready for potatoes and turning the field beans (green manure) in – not helped by such a wet winter. It isn’t my favourite job….so I’m happy it’s done now.
Finally I have the materials needed to finish the fence/deck area…….it still looks a little forlorn without plants but come summer it should be a glorious place to sit……
The season is gradually gearing up…….seed sowing and pricking out become the perfect rainy day activity. Today’s sowing session includes one of my most important and loved crops…..the tomatoes.
It feels like Spring is just around the corner…..and that there are too many jobs to do….but there’s still time to prep the beds and enjoy some quiet time with the birds.
Once a month on my site we get together to look after the communal parts…….we mow grass, fix fences, tend to trees etc……and eat cake! It is one of the joys of gardening in a communal site.
The snow has all gone and it’s time to get on with preparing the beds for the spring sowings and plantings.
With the big sow not far away it’s time to make some pots using old newspapers and loo roll tubes.
A sudden cold blast makes it feel like we’re months away from spring again…..
