The weather is definitely on the turn here with a big dumping of rain due in a couple of days….so it’s high time to harvest dried produce. Today it’s the turn of the beans… I discuss my drying methods and how I store to ensure a clean, long lasting produce to rely on in the kitchen through the next few months.
Year: 2020
Time out: September 25th. The big clear out continues.
The weather has certainly changed in the last few days and we’re now chilly, damp and grey……not the most conducive weather for the garden but perfect for indoor jobs……including carrying on with my big clear out.
September Time Out: Day 24: Stinky seeds & seasonal jobs.
The first chilly, damp start to the day in months meant I had to change my plans for the day…..but that’s OK…..still plenty to do indoors…..and it came as a good reminder to me to get on with some seasonal tasks.
September Time Out: Day 23: Postbag & discount offer!
I woke feeling a little flat today……and then my lovely postman buzzed me to say he had some parcels for me. Ooooh, what fun. One of them came with a lovely surprize for me to pass on to you all….. a discount code for Rachel’s lovely soaps and balms. What a wonderful start to my day.
September Time Out: Day 22: Firefighters & baking.
A lovely day of chatting in the garden ends with a bit of a fright…..just for a moment……and I am reminded how thankful we all should be for the amazing and brave work firefighters do. Once over that I look forward to some cosy time indoors.
September Time Out: Day 21: ‘Bubbles’, beetles & books.
Mondays are always my bonkers running about all over the community days……I love them! Today is no exception……it’s always a mixed bag and I never know quite what to expect or what I might discover along the way. I had a brief stop at home during the middle of it all so thought I’d grab the chance to have a quick catch up with you all.
Vivi’s Kitchen Garden 298: Leeks, Cavolo Nero & ‘Crop and Drop’.
On another beautiful autumn day I carry on the jobs of getting ready for winter…..plants coming out, new plants going in……where beds will be in action over the winter I need to protect the soil from the weather with as thick a mulch as possible……I can achieve this in part using the ‘crop and drop’ technique.
Vivi’s Kitchen Garden 297: Harvesting for a recipe (plus seed saving).
It’s the time of year when my attention needs to turn to seed saving to ensure I have a good supply for starting a whole new garden next year…….today I’m in the vine bed selecting the juiciest, plumpest fruits….. I also need to do some ‘shopping’ for a specific recipe that I haven’t tried before.
Vivi’s Kitchen Garden 296: Biodiversity, chickpeas & lavender.
As we get to the tail end of the summer season there are lots of things to be harvested…..one of the harvests I am going to do is a little earlier than in previous years in the hopes that I can beat the mice to them….the chickpeas!
September Time Out: Day 10:: Jam, seeds & parcels.
My back is still playing up a little so it’s a day of quiet errands……enough to keep me moving but nothing to over exert my angry back muscles. The postman arrives with a couple of mystery parcels.
