Vivi’s Kitchen Garden: Onion Day!

Today it’s all about getting my onions in. The white onions are Jet Set and the reds are Red Baron. Before I can start planting, though, there’s the small matter of preparing the bed…..I need to uncover it and see if my crop and drop of last autumn has helped my soil. Planted Wednesday 13th of April.

Beyond Frugal: A low spend year. Bills and Boredom.

Continuing in our low spend year series we’re at month four…….and this is typically the month when New Year’s resolutions take a nose dive…….we get bored of doing it! So today I’m talking about some challenges to try to take our minds off shopping…..and addressing the recent huge increases in bills.

Vivi’s Kitchen Garden: The herb bed revamp begins.

The herb bed has been looking a bit tatty for a while now and some plants simply have not thrived there……..so, today, I’m starting in on revamping it….out with the old and in with the new! While I’m at this end of the garden I also tend to the plants on the deck and the little areas around the coldframe. It’s great to make a start.

On the Sofa: A day in the life… part one.

It’s a rainy, cold day so I’m getting on with things indoors. Come and hang out with me while I tackle myriad eclectic jobs…….parcels, printers and potting on amongst them. This is part one (it was a long day!)…part two to follow soon.

Vivi’s Kitchen Garden: Dig for Victory – back to the garden.

After a three week hiatus I am finally back in the garden. It seems more important than ever to make the most of my growing space and produce as much food as I can……..with all the price hikes we’re experiencing it feels like this little garden will be my own version of the Dig for Victory gardens out grandparents had to make. A bit of chat about some experiments I’m trying this year and then a check on the garden to see how things have fared in my absence.

Thoughts on…..Month 59. Being Victor Meldrew.

It has been a bit of an up and down month with some frustrating times…….there have been a few occasions when I have been channelling Victor Meldrew! If I was a cartoon I would have steam coming out of my ears but, as always, I’m trying to laugh it off and find things to be optimistic about.

Vivi’s Kitchen Garden: Peppers, Celery & Pelargoniums. Sowing, pricking out & potting on.

I still don’t feel up to time in the garden but I can get my hands dirty at home in the meantime. Today I am sowing my celery and I show you how I make the paper pots I use for them. I’m also potting on my peppers now they’re ready……..but some of them look rather sorry for themselves…I speculate why. Also a quick chat about my Pelargonium cuttings and when you can take yours if you haven’t already done so.

On the Sofa: An octopus, a fox & a drag queen…plus a request!

I may have been cooped up at home for the last 10 days…..and spending time in bed…..but, hahaha, I still have a lot to chat about! Join me (with a cuppa and your knitting etc, it’s a long one again!) as I recount some of the last few days…….and explain the title! Oh….and there may be an unexploded WWII bomb amongst it all too.
