During a break in all the rain we’ve been having I dash out to the garden to do some more harvesting and start to think about protecting some of the more delicate plants from the cold to come.

Vivi’s Kitchen Garden 224: Starting the Autumn jobs.
The weather has suddenly changed…..the air is much colder and there’s a dampness to each day…..it signals the time to get on with the autumn jobs. It will be one of the busiest months of the year for me and I can’t wait to get stuck in.

The weather is certainly changing and with a whole week of rain forecast I make the most of a clear morning to begin to harvest beans which will be stored dry over the coming months.
Thoughts on……Month 29: Busy days & the Malvern Show.
Another month has whizzed by…..and life seems to get busier by the day. It was great to end the month on a high by visiting the RHS Autumn Show at Malvern with friends….it was a wonderful day full of agricultural machinery, rural crafts, beautiful flowers & veggies…….friends and fun.
In the Kitchen: Achocha and Chickpea Curry.
Hmmmm, what to do with the Achocha harvest……I take the plunge and have a go at cooking with a vegetable completely new to me. I literally had no idea when to harvest it, what to look for or how to cook it…..so I flew by the seat of my pants. How did it turn out? Tune in to see.

The achocha plants have been a success this year and given me so many little fruits……so it’s time to harvest some and think about how to cook them. I also begin to turn my attention to some maintenance jobs in the garden…

As the season goes on and more of the garden begins to die back I find myself frequently thinking about and planning for next year…….and a huge part of this is organising my seed saving from this year’s harvests to ensure that I actually do have something to sow/plant next year…..

Get your beans out and pod along with me! Chatting while podding…..what a pleasant way to spend half an hour. Another two kilos of Coco de Paimpol for the freezer appear as I chat about my typical day.
Vivi’s Kitchen Garden 219: Stringing onions & evaluating the year so far.
On a beautifully warm, sunny day I get on with the job of stringing up my onions for storing over the winter. As I string them I think about things that have gone well this year and things which have gone poorly…..and think about changes I may make next year.
