It may be chilly and damp out there but it’s perfect for a bit of digging and bed rearranging……my new motto has become ‘Just get out there!’……the rewards, for a few hours of work, are huge. I leave the garden on a high and know that I’m doing the best for my little space to give back to me next year…..so, go on, just get out there.
Dear Vivi, it pains me to see you work so hard digging up your plot. I have always found great satisfaction in digging my garden but I, too, have bad knees and very heavy clay soil. I was about to give up gardening (oh, no!) because of the pain. Have you seen the No Dig method videos by Charles Dowding on youtube? I am trying the method for my winter crops and they seem to be doing well. It involves, at most, using your fork to aerate the soil, spreading compost on top and letting the worms take the organic matter down into the soil. He also uses the same cardboard mulch on top of the compost that you use to keep the soil moist and friable. Maybe you could try it on one bed to see if it works for you.
Of course…..the no-dig method has been around for years…..I just don’t have enough material to do it with unfortunately. 🙂
